I was driving my kids to school one day when I heard the breaking news.
"Do not travel in your car or motor vehicle today. Today is a clean carbon day"
Well, it was a bit late for me.
I loved my kids to bits. Little Toby and Emma. Toby wanted to become like me, a mini cab driver who worked nights. But I couldn't allow him to do that yet, driving a car at stupid hours of the morning? No, he had school tomorrow.
And Emma. She always wanted to be an air hostess. I think its just so she can travel all around the world, seeing beautiful sights, and getting a tan. She told me she wanted to travel to New York to go to fashion school, and I said in response, "As soon as you can drive a car, you can go".
She reluctantly agreed.
That's when dreams became a reality. Looking ahead, I noticed a van had suddenly stopped. Braking viciously to avoid hitting it, I stopped roughly four feet from the van. The van, covered in ads for "cheap skip hire", obviously had stopped for something important. Stopping abruptly on a busy junction was not the norm in this small town.
I told my kids to wait in the car while I checked out what the hold-up was. The van driver was yelling loudly and honking his horn ferociously by this point, almost as if he had got to breaking point and surpassed it. I tried to interpret his yells but to no avail. I just could not understand what his issue was.
Then, I looked into the road.
Laying, face down in the middle of the road, an elderly lady, probably in her late 60s, having difficulty breathing. She may have being an asthma attack at first, but now it had worsened. She was in the state of an epileptic fit, although not a fit. I noticed that one of my kids had climbed out of the car.
"Get back in the car, Toby" I yelled.
I frantically dialled 999, hoping to save this woman's life.
Then...nothing.
Everything went silent. Everything had disappeared from around me.
And then I realised. Nobody had been hit by a car.
Except me.
