I moped around my flat, staring out the window at the skip for hire sign until the words no longer had any meaning. I missed my boyfriend. He was motoring around Italy, spending about half his time riding his moped up and down in the wine country, and the other half on a motoring tour through the historic ruins of ancient Rome. I wished I could travel, too, but I couldn't just hop on my moped and follow him. I had a job, and responsibilities. Still, it would be nice just to drop everything and surprise him on his motoring tour.

Maybe I still could, though. I calculated that if I asked my boss for Friday and Monday off, I could just catch a quick flight to Italy, and I could surprise my boyfriend with a lovely weekend together. I could tell from the last time he'd called me, that he was missing me just as much as I was missing him. So I made my travel arrangements, and I called the hotel where my boyfriend was staying, just to make sure I had the right address.

My boss was growly at first, but he finally agreed to let me have the time off. I let my mum know where I was heading, and she gave me her standard "what to do when you travel abroad" speech. At last I was on the airplane, ready to go.

Now, I'm afraid of flying. Not the dramatic kind that you see on the movies, where people collapse, or have screaming fits. But the quiet desperate kind of afraid, where you clutch your armrests and pray very quietly that you won't go down in flames. So I was understandably tense on the flight over. And when the plane landed, I was desperately looking for the ladies' room. There was no way I was going to use the facilities on the plane. What if we crashed? Then when my mother came to identify my body, she'd be asking, "Was she wearing clean underwear?" And they would say no, and then ... well, I just didn't want that to happen.

And it was a lucky thing that I was looking for the ladies' room so intently, as it turned out. I didn't spot the ladies' room, but I did see my boyfriend, overnight bag in hand, about to board the very plane I had just left. He looked shocked when he saw me, and then he was SO happy! He was heading back to spend the weekend with me, to surprise me. It was just lucky that we saw each other, or else we'd have both been spending the weekend alone anyway.

So we spent a romantic weekend in Italy together, and everything worked out perfectly. Sometimes luck IS on your side!
