Before I purchased my first brand new auto, my parents owned an ugly, old, coffee colored, beat up van which stunk like old people. I hated being driven around in the smelly van which was the the cause of finger pointing and silly remarks from our neighbors. My father, however, loved and cherished his hideous and van and swore never to get rid of it. Being completely humiliated by that poor excuses of a "junk-mobile" I promised to get my own auto. Before I could go on my quest to finding the perfect auto for myself, I had to learn to drive. I had no clue as how to even start a vehicle, so driving would be extra challenging. My parents owned two other vehicles aside from the van, but neither of them were in good condition to take a driving practice test in. I begged my father to get them working again, so I wouldn't be seen driving the monstrous beast he called "my precious van".

I had to settle for taking my driving practice test in the van and was humiliated at the fact that everybody in my neighborhood stared at me while I practiced. After a while ,I began to get the hang of driving. My driving practice test was a success. I did not at all enjoy the smell of the van, but being able to maneuver the beast as gracefully as I did, made me feel pretty good about myself. In all reality, driving the van did not seem so humiliating after all.

I had ,prior to this event, pondered on the thought of taking automatic driving lessons from an instructor school. Quite honestly, I was not only embarrassed of being seen in the van , but I was embarrassed of being seen with my parents. After the van driving experience, I realized something. My parents are not bad at all. In their older age, they are wiser, less interesting, but still loving.

I went to sleep that night, appreciating the fact that my parents took the time to teach me how to drive the van that I despised so much. Now, I own the smelly ugly van and I swear never to get rid of it.
