I got my provisional driving licence from the dsa. I wanted to do a crash driving course in Kent. I looked in the Yellow Pages to find a list of driving instructors. I saw a few driving schools that did 4 hours of driving lessons per day. Out of all the driving instructors I decided on Fred Hills. Some of the driving instructors had manual cars and I hoped to learn in an automatic car. He had an automatic car and his advertisement said that he would get people to a very high standard of driving.

Fred Hills was a short man with black hair and blue eyes. His car was a Mini. He had a kind temperament and a way of making me feel confident. He showed me the car's controls and I turned into a country lane. He said I could go as slowly as I liked to get used to driving.

Over the next week I learned how to deal with roundabouts. I looked at reversing into a space, doing a turn in the road, a how to do an emergency stop. I learned how to park on a hill and then how to start off again. I became less nervous of passing large buses and huge lorries. I felt happy that I had one of the best driving instructors in the UK.

I booked my theory test and went for that in Bristol. I did a set of questions about driving and then did some hazard perception. I was delighted to pass and the man gave me a certificate. I told Fred that I had passed and he was pleased. He told me to go ahead and book the practical test. I carried on having two lessons of one hour a week until my test date.

I took my test in Weston-super-Mare and I felt nervous about it. The driving examiner was female. On the test she got me to go around town, into the country lanes, down a one-way road and I had to do an emergency stop. I didn't like backing around the corner but I did that well. I was over joyed when she said I had passed the test.

I went home with a big smile on my face. My mum was delighted to hear my great news. My sister gave me a box of chocolates. That evening I went out for a meal of fish and chips with my friends to celebrate. The next day I went to have a look at some second hand cars. I bought an automatic Volkswagen Beetle for four thousand pounds.
